Trent Tucker University Scholars Program 1/07/09
On Wednesday, January 7th , our student-athletes helped out at the Trent Tucker University Scholars Program in Nicholson Hall. Fourteen children participated in the event from the W.I.S.E. Charter School in North Minneapolis. Our student-athletes spoke to the students about the importance of staying in school and earning a college degree. They also emphasized how participating in collegiate sports goes hand in hand with earning good grades and a degree. The children and student-athletes joined together for a fun science experiment, where children calculated a series of equations. In the end the students ended up with the same
number as their age! The second activity was outside, where two student-athletes placed mint Mentos into a Coke bottle. The students oh'ed and aw'ed as they watched a geyser of soda exploding out the top of the bottle. After the experiment, they all discussed the chemical reactions and how "cool" science was. The student-athletes who assisted in this outreach event were Alicia Rue, Chim Okoroji, Becca Pilkerton, Kate Ballion, ChiChi Omeoga (women's track and field), and Ray Blackledge (men's track and field).
