On Wednesday, January 14th, the Golden Gopher student-athletes volunteered their time with the Trent Tucker University Scholars Program in Nicholson Hall. Fourteen children participated in the event from the W.I.S.E. Charter School in North Minneapolis. Our student-athletes spoke to the students about the importance of staying in school and earning a college degree. They also emphasized how participating in collegiate sports goes hand in hand with earning good grades and a degree. Everybody joined together for a fun science experiment. The middle school students were given a cup containing water and borax, and a second cup of Elmer's™ glue. The students mixed the two cups of liquid together until a solidifying slime formed. They played with their slime, and also learned the magic behind its formation; the chemical reactions between the borax and the water creates a link of polymers for the glue to link onto, leaving less free space between molecules creating a semi-solid. The student-athletes who volunteered at this event were Alicia Rue, Chim Okoroji, Becca Pilkerton (women's track and field), and Ray Blackledge (men's track and field).
