Read-a-thon at Cottage Grove Elementary

Celebration of Black History Month

Amir Pinnix (Football), Jay Thomas (Football), Mike Sherels (Football), Josh Robertson (Football), Adam Weber (Football), Neel Allen (Football), Maggie Souba (Women’s Hockey), Alex Daniels (Football), and Dagney Willey (Women’s Hockey) spoke at Maxfield Elementary in St. Paul on February 20th and 21st to announce the winners of the Black History Month Essay Contest. The children wrote essays on one of four African-Americans who have had a positive impact on the state of Minnesota. Student-athletes speak at Oak Point Elementary


Mike Linnemann (Men’s Track and Field), Luke Walker (Men’s Track and Field), and Mary Ann Weinzierl (Rowing) visited Oak Point Elementary on March 21st and spoke to the children about the dangers of tobacco use.

Ringing bells for the Salvation Army

Bobbi Ross (Women’s Hockey), Maggie Souba (Women’s Hockey), Dagney Willey (Women’s Hockey), Kadian Douglas (Women’s Track), Chi Chi Omega (Women’s Track), Tiera Barmore (Women’s Track), and Damola Ogundipe (Football) all volunteered at the Mall of America on Friday, December 15th. They rang bells for the Salvation Army in efforts to raise money for those in need. The money was used to deliver hot food, blankets, and small Christmas gifts to the homeless. The Salvation Army also delivers Christmas food boxes and presents homebound seniors and others in need. To learn more about the Salvation Army visit www.salvationarmyusa.org.

Toy Drive to benefit St. Joseph’s Children’s Home

Student-athletes from seven teams volunteered on December 2nd, 2006 in an effort to bring joy during this holiday season to those who are less fortunate. Lunch Buddy Program on 11.29.06


On Wednesday, November 29th, Laura Massey (Women’s Tack), Bobbi Ross (Women’s Hockey), Ben Puhl (Men’s Track & Cross Country), Justin Grunewald (Men’s Track), Kelly Wilson (Women’s Track & Cross Country), and Sally Paulson (Women’s Track & Cross Country) had lunch with residents of Bywood East Health Care Center. This outing was a part of our Lunch Buddy Program.

"Eat Smart! Play Hard!" at New Vision School

Emily Brown (Women’s Track and Cross Country), Cheryl Wick (Rowing), Angela Reesman (Rowing) and Ariella DePrenger-Gottfried (Women’s Track and Cross Country) spoke to middle school children at New Vision School in Northeast Minneapolis on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006. They discussed the importance of exercise and proper nutrition to lead a healthy life. During the presentation, they tracked their resting heart rate and then tested it again after physical activity. The middle school students also enjoyed a healthy snack after the presentation.

Food Drive to benefit the Emergency Food Shelf

More than 30 student-athletes from a variety of teams took time out of their weekend to encourage fans to give before they attended the Men’s and Women’s Basketball games. Friday, November 17th and Sunday, November 19th were the two days that the student-athletes volunteered to raise money and collect canned food items to benefit the Emergency Food Shelf. This year they raised $1,543.67 and 4 large bins of canned food items. To learn more about this great organization, visit their website www.emergencyfoodshelf.org.

Help Gopher student-athletes raise money for a good cause!

What: The Cystic Fibrosis Gopher Sports Challenge. Participate in a sports competition to raise money for cystic fibrosis. The challenge consists of seven events.

Who: You and nine of your friends. Any U of M college student or staff member is allowed to participate. There is a registration fee of $50 per team.

Why: To raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and to win cool Gopher prizes.

Where: Various Gopher athletic venues on campus.

When: After the football game Saturday, September 23rd at 3:00pm. Sign-in starts at 2:30pm.
